Mental Retardation Research Center
The Developmental Disabilities Research Centers are a national resource. Established by Congress in 1963 as "centers of excellence" for research in mental retardation and developmental disabilities, they represent our nation's first sustained effort to prevent and treat disabilities through biomedical and behavioral research. Today, they are the world's largest concentration of scientific expertise in the fields of intellectual and developmental disabilities. They form a network that fosters communication, innovation, and excellence in research.
Funding for these centers from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development supports centralized, state-of-the art research resources and facilities shared by investigators with research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health or foundations. Collectively, their work represents a multidisciplinary, vigorous, and innovative research attack on developmental disabilities. The centers are located within premier research universities and/or are affiliated with major medical centers, which provide academic and scientific expertise as well as institutional support. The centers' investigators also are engaged in training the next generation of scientific investigators and clinicians.
